5 Things to Consider Before Building a Catio
Planning a catio? Here are the five most important things to think through before you start — from size and placement to local permits and cat personality.
So you've decided your cat needs a catio — great call. But before you start picking out paint colors, there are a few important things to think through. Here's what we walk every customer through before we pick up a hammer.
1. Where Will It Go?
Placement matters a lot. Attached to the house gives easy cat access through a window or cat door. Freestanding in the yard requires a covered walkway or you carrying the cat out. Think about sun exposure too — you don't want a southwest-facing catio that turns into an oven in August.
2. How Big Should It Be?
Bigger is almost always better when it comes to catios. Cats need vertical space as much as horizontal. A small footprint can still work great if it has multiple levels and climbing options.
3. How Many Cats?
One chill cat vs. three active cats changes everything about the design. More cats = more space, more perches, more escape routes so they don't corner each other.
4. Do You Need a Permit?
In most Orange County and Rockland County towns, a small catio doesn't require a permit. But if you're building something large or permanent, it's worth a quick call to your town's building department. We can advise on this too.
5. What's Your Cat's Personality?
A skittish cat might love a cozy enclosed corner. An adventurous cat will want high perches and room to run. We design with your specific cat in mind.
